Add the "S" to Feminism

Feminisms = Plural blog post by Lisa, November 21, 2008 - 8:22am; tagged feminisms.

It's like confetti, I explain. Feminism, like confetti, is one of those words that needs to be understood as plural, plain and simple. You don't throw one piece of confetti in the air to celebrate. (Well, technically, one could do this, yes, but that would not be very festive.) Similarly, you don't just celebrate feminism with with one strand of thought. Feminism must be seen, recognized, as plural - as a collective movement - if we are to accurately and justifiably claim a movement is actually taking place.

The Box's Crush of the Week: Rachel Maddow

The Box blog post by Juliana Tringali, November 21, 2008 - 7:54am; tagged MSNBC, Rachel Maddow.

Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow wins the soon-to-be coveted title of The Box's Crush of the Week thanks to her mad reporting skillz, refreshing sense of humor, and love of cocktails.

The fact that she's a groundbreaking lesbian news anchor? Icing on the crush cake.

What's the German word for douchebag?

Love / Shove blog post by Kelsey Wallace, November 20, 2008 - 4:47pm; tagged Douchebag Decree, Germany, Pascha, tattoos.

Douchebag Decree

What do you get when you combine a gigantic brothel, a promotional stunt, a tattoo artist, and a ton of douchebags? The answer, of course, is the recipient of this week's Ye Olde Douchebag Decree!

A day of remembrance

Love / Shove blog post by Kelsey Wallace, November 20, 2008 - 3:59pm; tagged Bridges McRae, Duanna Johnson, hate crimes, Transgender Remembrance Day.

Today is Transgender Remembrance Day. Founded in 1999, this is a day set aside each year to remember the transgendered people who have been victims of hate crimes and other abuse throughout the year. Unfortunately, this type of shitty behavior is still going on as we speak. Case in point: former Memphis Police Officer Bridges McRae.

Did media literacy just get a whole lot cooler?

Love / Shove blog post by Kelsey Wallace, November 19, 2008 - 5:34pm; tagged cuteness, Gideon Yago, IFC, media literacy.

Gideon Yago

Obviously we here at Bitch love us some media criticism. That is why we are so excited to hear about the new IFC television show, "The IFC Media Project." (Well, that and the fact that the show is hosted by super-hunky-dreamboat Gideon Yago.)

Bond Girl Power

Love / Shove blog post by Kjerstin Johnson, November 19, 2008 - 2:25pm; tagged feminism, film, media criticism, reviews.

While there’s a lot a feminist critique of Quantum of Solace, the new James Bond flick, could cover, such as the other-ing of the voiceless “ethnic” communities/Bond’s sense of entitlement to their culture and resources, Judy Dench’s role as M, or the current, very real political turbulence in Bolivia (FYI? George Bush is still our president), this post mainly focuses on the use of the rape-revenge themes and surprise, surprise, the objectification of women found in the movie. And yes, there are spoilers.

Welcome, guest bloggers!

B-sides blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, November 17, 2008 - 6:03pm;

I'm really excited to announce that starting this very week we'll be hosting a rotating crew of guest bloggers. I'd like to introduce and welcome our first two:

Juliana Tringali, a regular and longtime contributor to and supporter of Bitch, started out as an intern here way back in the day, when she wrote this piece. Juliana will be blogging with a feminist eye on mainstream TV – so if you're dying to have conversations like, "Why Is 'Fake' the new 'Bitchy'?" after the latest episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta or America's Next Top Model, tune in...

and

Lisa, who blogs at A Woman's Ecdysis, truly one of the raddest blogs around, and where I'm always learning new concepts (like the term kyriarchy). Lisa will be exploring the term "feminist" in-depth – including recent controversies and conflicts, and efforts to claim feminism– asking questions like, What does it say when pro-choice advocates supported Sarah Palin and How does academic feminism fit into hip-hop?

Sexy kids' toys go to the dogs.

Love / Shove blog post by Kelsey Wallace, November 17, 2008 - 5:01pm; tagged Kids, sex, Tini Puppini, toys.

Apparently, the stuffed animals of yesterday just aren't sexy enough for today's smokin' hot youngsters. Enter Tini Puppini. These tiny stuffed dogs are, according to the products' website, "the most popular pups in town." They wear shoes, clothes, and makeup. They love shopping and gossip. They hang out in all of the hippest spots, from nightclubs to spas. And, each of the three pups has her own unique personality!Tini Puppini

Find out more about each individual pup, and tell us your thoughts, after the jump.
