Dear Bitch Supporters,

This fall, we asked for your help and you told us overwhelmingly that Bitch was a worthy investment. In four weeks we received $74,000 in gifts from loyal readers like you. Without your generous support, we would not be here today.

We've made history together!

Bitch on Wheels blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, September 18, 2008 - 4:47pm; tagged bitch, bitch magazine, feminist media, feminist publishing, fundraising, independent publishing, nonprofit media, nonprofit publishing, nonprofits, save Bitch.

We're thrilled to announce that just three short days after our announcement that we need to raise $40,000 by October 15th in order to print the next issue of Bitch, you've rallied together and propelled us beyond our $40,000 fundraising goal. In fact, by the time we looked up from our computers, you'd already donated $46,000! On top of that, you've spread the word far and wide, and offered powerful and inspiring words of support.

This tremendous and swift outpouring has been honoring and humbling—particularly because you've offered it during the worst days the U.S. economy has seen this year. Thank you. We're deeply grateful.

Please help us keep the momentum going and continue donating and offering your feedback and ideas. We know many of you have ideas and concerns about Bitch's future and sustainability, and we're grateful for the critical feedback and ideas you've offered so far. We're listening. And we assure you we're hard at work on a sustainable vision, based on your feedback (and we're at work on a survey to help facilitate this process).

Ever wonder why we're called B-Word?

Bitch on Wheels blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, August 15, 2008 - 1:22pm; tagged bitch, Bitch history, offensive language, the word bitch.

In my shock at seeing a Wal-Mart ad on the Mother Jones website, I neglected to include a link to the article I was searching for in the first place, which is the story of the California Secretary of State's office rejecting the name Bitch Publications on the grounds that it was obscene.

On the word bitch

Bitch on Wheels blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, August 12, 2008 - 9:52am; tagged bitch, inclusive language, language, language reclamation, offensive language, radical lesbianism, reappropriation of language, the word bitch.

Over on the post that asks folks to vote for which PETA is most offensive, someone says that by criticizing PETA, we at Bitch are just calling the kettle black.

Of course I'm offended by the PETA ad campaigns. As a long-time radical lesbian feminist, I abhor the explotation of the female body and the objectification of women as nothing more than sexual beings.

I would never give a dime to PETA even though I am also strongly in favor of the humane treatment of animals

However, how does its strategy of using "shock" to draw attention differ from your magazine? After all, isn't calling yourself "BITCH" simply a way to show how chic and clever and modern you are, how 'in your face' you can be, and how you like to flaunt convensional standards of language and cultural acceptance

The word bitch (unless applied to certain animals) has always been and is still a derogatory and borderline vulgar term for women. Old fashioned ideas? Sure. But so is not displaying naked women in suggestive poses just to sell products or ideas.

For "Bitch" to complain about PETA is disingenuous and hypocritical.

Come work at Bitch!

Bitch on Wheels blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, July 16, 2008 - 1:34pm; tagged bitch, bitch magazine, excitement, hiring, jobs.

Please spread as far and wide as you possibly can...

----------

Here at Bitch, we're in search of a perfect someone to join our tiny but dedicated staff as a program director (full-time) at our office in Portland, Oregon. Someone bright, with a deep talent and love for analyzing media/pop culture from a perspective rooted in social/economic justice, who's passionate about both print publishing and newer (to us, at least) forms like online, audio, and video, someone excited about helping shape the future of the work we do at Bitch (and who recognizes Bitch's potential), someone committed to DIY/grassroots operating, who understands Bitch's role as both critiquing what's crappy and praising what's good, who's as excited about Bitch as a multimedia organization as Bitch as a magazine…

Please check it out, spread the word, and let us know what you think!  What features do you like?  What would you like to see?  Comment away...

And please support our efforts if you can – we're very excited that our site is ad free and offers content free of charge.  This publishing model only works if the folks who can support this work do.  Plus then you can see the fancy rainbow donate button in action. Exciting...

Bureau of Reclamation

Love / Shove blog post by Miriam Wolf, February 25, 2008 - 12:10pm; tagged bitch, Hillary Clinton, language, SNL, Tina Fey.

Tina Fey's return to the Weekend Update chair included a big dollop of support for Hillary Clinton along with an argument for taking back the word bitch.
This could only have been better if she'd held up a copy of Bitch magazine!
