Samantha Bee—Proud 'Vagina American'

sm[art] blog post by Briar Levit, September 3, 2008 - 6:33pm; tagged: Election, Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, Sarah Palin, The Daily Show.

Just so you all don't think I don't love and support our gal-comics on this side of the pond, I thought I'd share this. You may have already seen this if you have cable—but Samantha Bee of The Daily Show does a great bit with Stewart about her reaction as a woman to McCain's choice of Palin for VP. If you haven't seen it, hold out for her closing line—brilliant!

PS: I had to put a long clip on here, so if you're pressed for time, skip ahead to 2:52.

More on journalism crackdowns

Minnesota Nice blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, September 3, 2008 - 3:43pm; tagged: independent media, independent publishing, RNC, RNC 2008.

Because again, it's critical that everyone who values independent publishing know what independent journalists are up against...

By Tim Karr at the Huffington Post:

In St. Paul this week, a new generation of media makers is under assault by the city's mayor and law enforcement officers.

These local officials think freedom of the press is a privilege that extends only to their closest allies in mainstream media.

Call to action for independent journalists reporting on the RNC

Minnesota Nice blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, September 3, 2008 - 2:51pm; tagged: Amy Goodman, Democracy Now!, independent media, police brutality, RNC 2008, RNC protests.

By now many of you have probably heard that several journalists (including Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman and an AP photographer) were arrested while they were covering protests of the Republican National Convention. But as independent publishers ourselves, I think it's critical that the word get out as far and wide as possible.

Hillary as a "symbol of hope, justice, and equality"?

Minnesota Nice blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, September 1, 2008 - 9:32am; tagged: this is feminism?.

I have no idea what it's like to be the "president" of a feminist organization that focuses so much energy on electoral politics.

But seriously?

Does it just get to a point where people are so blinded by PR and spin that propping up Hillary as a symbol of peace, justice, and equality in the name of feminism seems like a good thing to do?

...

An Open Letter to Senator Hillary Clinton
