Some days you wake up to the right light coming through the window, that good song with the hand claps and the trombone in your head, and you don’t mind the slush at your feet or the hole (in the crotch) in your pants. Your coffee’s good and things just seem like they’re alright. And then you run into this….

Adventures in Feministory: The Monie's in the Middle

Love / Shove blog post by Jonanna Widner, December 16, 2008 - 6:54pm; tagged Adventures in Feministory, hip hop, Monie Love, music.
Climb aboard our little time-traveling contraption and set the dial to the year 1990, friends, because we are going on a little ride to the past. Of course, 1990 isn't all that long ago—one could barely consider it history in most cases—but keep in mind that in hip-hop years, two decades is like two centuries.

Record label finds belly threatening, natural

Love / Shove blog post by Kjerstin Johnson, December 3, 2008 - 4:15pm; tagged body image, music, rebellyon, record industry, video.
belly.jpg Amanda Palmer (brains behind Dresden Dolls, among other projects), was recently asked by her record label, Roadrunner, to cut scenes from her video "Leeds United," which features (along with a burlesque club, soccer fans, dancing girls) a few shots of Palmer's.....dunh dunh dunnnnh.....exposed, Bowflex-free tummy! Mr. A&R wanted those shots edited, explaining, "I'm a guy, Amanda. I understand what people like." Video and follow-up after jump

Beard-dumb?

Love / Shove blog post by Kjerstin Johnson, November 14, 2008 - 2:38pm; tagged humor, music, musician, videos.
Tim Harrington, front man for indie rock band Les Savy Fav is as infamous for his stage antics (and tiny red shorts) as he is for his vocals. Tim has recently taken his showmanship to a new level with the PitchforkTV-produced web-show Beardo. Episode one, “Vampiral Dysfunction” (which probably would have been funnier not premiering on Halloween) guest-starred funny lady Kristen Schaal (Daily Show, Flight of the Conchords) and seemed to hold promise as another amusing, weekly online-timewaster. But then ooh…Tim…things got weird.

Oregon Loves its Ladies' Rock!

Love / Shove blog post by Kjerstin Johnson, October 23, 2008 - 5:07pm; tagged local, music, Northwest, Oregon, Portland.
The Northwest is already well known as an alternative music capital of the United States. From Sleater-Kinney to Kathy Foster, women's contributions to its rep have not been insignificant. In the next few weeks, Oregon will have no less than three awesome events showcasing women who rock that local ladies should definitely check out!

What past Bitch articles do you want to see online?

Bitch on Wheels blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, July 24, 2008 - 1:12pm; tagged articles, bitch magazine, internet etiquette, music, Prince.

One of the people hard at work behind the scenes here is Kyla Wagener, AKA Bitch webmonkey.  I'm sharing this for two reasons. First because Kyla recently started her own blog. She's wicked smart. You should read it.

I also share this because in her role as webmonkey, Kyla's wrangling all the content from past issues to be posted here. Our plan is to make available all content from issues that are sold out, and selected content from issues that are still available for purchase (get them while they last!).

Sisterhood of Muslim female MCs and singers

sm[art] blog post by Briar Levit, July 21, 2008 - 2:00pm; tagged hip hop, Islam, music, musician, muslim, rap.

I just happened to stumble upon this inspiring musical project spearheaded by singer, Deeyah (often referred to as the 'Muslim Madonna'), today. She describes it as this:

'Sisterhood' is the collective name for a mixtape project of previously unreleased songs written by young up and coming female Muslim rappers, singers and poetesses from the UK, Europe and US.

Resisting and organizing through creative media

Bitch on Wheels blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, June 5, 2008 - 4:42pm; tagged AMC 2008, classism, community organizing, Detroit, documentary, gentrification, hip-hop, music, music videos, racism.

I'm back in Portland, still processing and reflecting on my trip to the Midwest. I'll be posting more about that soon, but in the meantime, I wanted to share this video about displacement/gentrification in Detroit, featuring Detroit-based female hip-hop artist, Invincible. It's a beautiful example of how powerful a story becomes when different forms of media are combined.
