Adventures in Feministory: Balls Out Edition

Love / Shove blog post by Jonanna Widner, December 8, 2008 - 6:47pm; tagged baseball, books, feministory, softball, sports, Title IX.

Let's saddle up the wayback machine, kids, and travel to the year 1866. It was this very year, when baseball was deemed too difficult and violent a sport for ladies to play, when the Vassar Resolutes hiked up their giant, heavy skirts to run the base paths anyway. I found this photo of the Resolutes (and, OMG—can you believe they were called the Resolutes?) in an advance copy of Jennifer Ring's Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don't Play Baseball, which will be available from the University of Illinois Press in March 2009...

Summer reading suggestions?

B-sides blog post by Amy S. Williams, July 31, 2008 - 5:55pm; tagged books, fiction, fun, reader ideas.

Anyone out there have summer reading suggestions for our on-line readers? Non-fiction and fiction....? graphic novels? essays? bring it all on.

My gal, my son and I are heading out on a roadtrip this Sunday to a little cabin in Montana for a week of reading and relaxing and I would love to take a stack of reader suggested books with me, as I am sure many of us would. Then maybe we could write reviews and post them to this post as comments?

Keep those book ideas coming. Everyone should have (and have access to) a good book on their nightstand.

What I'm reading right now

Delightfully Cranky blog post by Lisa Jervis, February 13, 2008 - 12:27pm; tagged books.

Susan Faludi's The Terror Dream: Fear and Fantasy in Post-9/11 America. I'm only on page 97, but so far am (unsurprisingly, given her track record) blown away by her brilliance.
