Since another PETA ad campaign is making the rounds in the blogosphere -- this one persuading Ben and Jerry's to use breast milk instead of cows' milk (Breast is best!) -- I wanted to offer a little bit here and send people over to a post that captures some of what's on my mind. Namely, the all-too-common refusal of non-veg*n feminists to even engage with the legitimate animal cruelty issues raised by organizations like PETA, and, as another example, the recent Skinny Bitch book series.
Long before I was aware of concepts like oppression and feminism, I learned about animal rights.
It
started as love. I've had a deep love for animals for as long as I can
remember, often preferring their company to that of humans. Growing up
I could spend hours -- probably days -- sitting in the cornfields
talking to mice, playing in the snow with my dog, or visiting the toads
and turtles near my grandparents' summer trailer.
PETA wants to advertise "Go vegan" message on border fence:
While many view the contentious border fence as a government fiasco, an animal rights group sees a rare opportunity.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans today to announce an unusual marketing pitch to the U.S. government: Rent us space on the fence for billboards warning illegal border crossers there is more to fear than the Border Patrol.
The billboards, in English and Spanish, would offer the caution: "If the Border Patrol Doesn't Get You, the Chicken and Burgers Will — Go Vegan."
